Guillain-Barré Syndrome Hospital Discharge Rates in Chile by Sex and Age Group, 2021–2024

Abstract

Introduction: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathy and one of the leading causes of acute flaccid paralysis in adults. In Chile, information regarding recent hospital discharge patterns associated with this condition remains limited. The aim of this study was to describe hospital discharge rates for GBS among the adult population in Chile during the 2021–2024 period. Methodology: An observational, descriptive, retrospective time-series study was conducted using hospital discharge records obtained from the Department of Health Statistics and Information (DEIS). Adults aged 20 years and older with a primary diagnosis of GBS (ICD-10 code G61.0) were included. Sex, age group, and length of hospital stay were analyzed. Crude hospital discharge rates per-100,000 inhabitants were calculated using descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 1,965 hospital discharges due to GBS were recorded during the study period. Hospital discharge rates increased overall from 2.91 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2021 to 3.88 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2024. Men consistently showed higher hospital discharge rates than women. The 65–79 years age group presented the highest rates. The overall mean length of hospital stay was 25.18 days and was higher among men. Conclusion: Hospital discharges associated with GBS in Chile increased overall between 2021 and 2024 and were more frequent among men and older adults. These findings provide updated information on hospital utilization associated with GBS in Chile and may serve as a basis for future epidemiological and clinical research.
