Trends in Mortality from Malignant Melanoma in Chile, 1997–2022: An Ecological Descriptive Study

Introduction: Malignant melanoma is the main cause of mortality due to skin neoplasms. In Chile, there is limited evidence describing mortality by geographical areas, which constitutes a gap for implementing prevention strategies focused on regions with higher mortality rates. Objective: To describe the evolution of malignant melanoma mortality in Chile between 1997 and 2022, analyzing its distribution by sex, age, and region. Method: Ecological, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. Data from the Department of Health Statistics and Information (DEIS) was used, including all deaths from malignant melanoma. Specific rates were calculated by age group, sex, and region. Results: A total of 4,581 deaths from malignant melanoma were recorded. Mortality from this cause has shown an upward trend, with the highest number of deaths registered in 2018. Fifty-three percent (53%) of the deaths were in men, and the most affected ages were 60-79 years. The Coquimbo region records the highest population-adjusted mortality rate, with 7 deaths per 10,000 inhabitants. Discussion and Conclusion: Over the last 25 years, malignant melanoma mortality in Chile has been increasing, mainly in men and older adults. The regional differences, particularly highlighting Coquimbo, evidence the need to strengthen prevention, early detection, and timely access to specialized care.
