Abstract

Introduction: Transient ischemic attack (TIA), constitutes an important risk factor for the development of cerebrovascular accidents. According to the American Heart Association, the risk of stroke 90 days after a TIA reaches 17.8%. In Chile, stroke is the main cause of death, with 8.437 deaths in 2016. The objective of this study is to determine the rate of hospital discharge (HSD) due to TIA between the years 2021-2024 in Chile. Methodology: Observational, descriptive, and study on HSD due to TIA diagnosis between 2021 and 2024 in Chile. Results: There were 11,005 hospital discharges, with a HSD of 14.89 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. A gradual increase in the HSD was observed starting in 2021, reaching a peak of 18.13 cases per 100,000 inhabitants by 2024. It predominated among males and adults aged 80 and older. The average hospital stay (AHS) was 4.80 days, with a longer stay among men, with an average of 5.05 days. Discussion: HSD shows a sustained increase, with predominance in males, possibly associated with a greater burden of risk factors. AHS increases with age and is higher in men, which could be related to a greater presence of comorbidities. Conclusion: Further research is needed to investigate the clinical characteristics and external factors that explain the behavior of HSD, in order to guide prevention strategies for TIA.
