Alcoholic Liver Cirrhosis: Epidemiological Analysis of the Hospital Discharge Rate in Chile (2020–2023)

Abstract

Introduction: Alcoholic liver cirrhosis (ALC) represents the final stage of alcohol-related liver disease (ALD), characterized by hepatic fibrosis, and constitutes a significant cause of morbidity, mortality, and hospitalization. In Chile, recent epidemiological information regarding its hospital-related patterns is limited, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: To describe the hospital discharge rate (HDR) for ALC in Chile during the period 2020–2023. Methodology: An observational, descriptive, and quantitative study was conducted using statistical data from the Department of Health Statistics and Information (DEIS) and the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The variables analyzed included sex, age group, and average length of hospital stay. Ethics committee approval was not required. Results: A total of 3,249 hospital discharges due to ALC were recorded during the study period, with an average HDR of 6.34 per 100,000 inhabitants. The highest HDR was observed in 2022, reaching 6.79 per 100,000 inhabitants. Males presented the highest HDR during the period, with 11.02 per 100,000 inhabitants. The age group with the highest HDR was 65–79 years, with a rate of 13.83 per 100,000 inhabitants. The average length of hospital stay was 11.21 days. Conclusion: ALC represents a significant hospital burden in Chile, with a predominance among men and older adults. These findings provide updated epidemiological information that may contribute to health planning and prevention strategies.
