Abstract

Introduction: Stroke is a serious medical emergency and a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. It is classified as ischemic or hemorrhagic, with ischemic strokes being more common. Major risk factors include hypertension, advanced age, diabetes, dyslipidemia, smoking, atrial fibrillation, and obesity.

Methodology: This observational, descriptive, ecological study analyzed stroke deaths in Chile from 2010 to 2022 (ICD-10 I60–I69), stratified by sex, age group, and year. Mortality rates per 100,000 population were calculated and presented in tables and graphs.

Results: During the study period, 110,426 stroke-related deaths were recorded. Mortality decreased from 52.1 per 100,000 in 2010 to 40.8 in 2020, with a minimum of 7,948 deaths. Adults aged ≥80 years had the highest mortality, while those under 40 had the lowest. Sex differences were minimal, although absolute deaths were slightly higher in women.

Discussion: The decline in mortality may be attributed to better control of risk factors, improved access to healthcare, and implementation of national strategies such as GES and ENS 2011–2020. Future studies should include sociodemographic and regional data to guide targeted prevention and care interventions.
